Under the tower, the Baptistry, the oldest part of the church which includes the original entrance to the Saxon Church dated AD 786. The arch which separates the Baptistry from the rest of the church is a complete Roman gateway erected originally at Corstopitum, just outside Corbridge, about AD 150.
